Sculptra in Washington D.C.

Collagen is one of the main building blocks of our skin. As we age, we gradually lose collagen which leads to a loss in facial volume and creates the “deflated” look throughout the face.

Many fillers exist to restore that volume, however not all treatments or injectables are created equal. Some target different areas of the face, and, more importantly, produce different effects. There are the hyaluronic acid fillers, like Restylane and Juvederm, that diminish lines by immediately restoring volume that can last up to a year.  However, Sculptra is an injectable that restores volume by stimulating your own tissues.

Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable that is best described as an injectable collagen stimulator. It is composed of Poly-L lactic acid in the form of micro particles. After they are injected throughout the areas of the face that are volume deficient, they begin to stimulate collagen. This creates subtle volume enhancement in regions such as the temples, cheeks, and perioral region. It creates support to the underlying skin and provides the structural foundation that creates a youthful external look.

What does the treatment consist of?

The treatment consists of an injectable session where Dr. Somenek or Dr. Pittman will inject Sculptra throughout the face using a blunt tip cannula or small needle to minimize the chances of bruising. Because Sculptra is mixed with water, there will be noticeable volume changes for most of the day. Once that water is resorbed by the body, the face will go back to baseline. However, those particles will begin to stimulate collagen over the next 4-6 weeks, creating natural volume enhancement throughout the face.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Almost anyone who is experiencing signs of aging and volume loss can benefit from noninvasive Sculptra Aesthetic. Potential patients should be in good health, understand the Sculptra treatment process, and hold realistic expectations for their results.

It is important to remember that starting at the age of 30 we start to lose around 1% of our collagen on a yearly basis. Because of this, many start sooner than later with their injections for preventative maintenance.

How many treatments will I need?

Dr. Somenek or Dr. Pittman will typically recommend 2-3 Sculptra treatment sessions in our Washington DC or New York City office, spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Throughout that time gradual volume enhancement will occur throughout the face as well as increase in skin tone.

How long will this last?

Studies have demonstrated that the results last up to two years. Patients will typically do yearly injections to maintain the collagen enhancing changes to their face.

What is the downtime?

No downtime is required after a Sculptra Aesthetic treatment. Most patients are back to their normal schedule the same afternoon. Side-effects of Sculptra are generally mild. Bruising, swelling, itching, and redness are common. Patients should only seek treatment from experienced, well-trained physicians like Dr. Michael Somenek and Dr. Troy Pittman.  Dr. Somenek trains others across the country how to use Sculptra and our Washington, DC office is a Sculptra training center of excellence.

Sculptra is ideal for restoring healthy facial contours, smoothing deep lines, and lifting tissues without creating an “overdone” appearance. While Sculptra Aesthetic does not provide immediate results, in just a few weeks, most patients will notice improvement in facial lines and volume. Slowly rejuvenating the body’s own collagen production, the benefits of each session will continue to improve over the next several months.
