Breast lift surgery (also aka mastopexy surgery) is a procedure designed to raise the breasts by removing and reshaping the skin and underlying tissues. The procedure also can reduce the overall size of the areolae and bring the nipples and areolae into a more favorable position.
A Washington DC breast lift is ideal for women with overall breast deflation and sagging as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and the normal aging process. It is not designed to add or remove overall volume to the breasts. Women who desire a change in the size of the breasts may benefit from breast augmentation, breast reduction, or mastopexy/augmentation together.
In your initial consult, Dr. Troy Pittman will perform a series of measurements to aid in planning of the breast surgery. He will walk you through the details of the breast lift, including preparation and recovery, and will answer any questions you may have.
The Breast Lift Procedure
Cosmetic breast surgery (aka mastopexy) is an outpatient procedure that lasts one to two hours and is performed under general anesthesia in order to ensure that the patient is comfortable and free from pain throughout the surgical session.
The appropriate technique used for a breast lift depends on the overall size and shape of the breasts in addition to the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed. Incisions may be placed around the areola in order to raise its position. A vertical incision may also be placed down the center of the lower breast if needed to carry out the skin resection. A horizontal curved incision across the inframammary fold may be made for further resection.
Once the excess skin is removed and the areolae have been resized and repositioned as needed, the incisions are carefully closed with medical sutures.
For women who are done with having children, a breast lift is often part of a larger mommy makeover package of surgeries that is meant to return the body to its pre-pregnancy form.
"I’ve spent the past 11 years working as a medical device rep […] After deciding to have a breast lift, I reached out to the large network of DC area device reps, I asked to be connected with all reps who work with plastic surgeons. I was put in touch with 7 individuals and every single person put Dr. Troy Pittman as their top, and sometimes only, recommendation. […] I cannot thank him and his staff more for such an amazing and life-changing experience."
What to Do After Breast Lift
Immediately after a breast uplift, Dr. Pittman will apply a dressing that will remain in place for 48 hours. Some tenderness and post-operative discomfort are expected and can be controlled with pain medications and muscle relaxers. During the healing process, it will be important to follow Dr. Pittman’s post-surgical care instructions as closely as possible. This will expedite the recovery process and help to avoid post-surgical complications.
Most patients are able to return to normal light activity within a few days. Swelling continues to go down over the next four to six weeks. Limited activity for the first couple weeks is recommended and will be discussed in your post-op visits. Patients must wear a supportive surgical bra for a time during the recovery period. Bras with underwire should be avoided, as they can damage the healing tissues of the breasts.
Once the swelling and bruising has reduced, patients can enjoy the full results of their breast lift surgery in the form of perkier and more youthful breasts that no longer sag.
Pricing and Financing for a Breast Lift
Pricing for a mastopexy surgery will vary depending on factors like the patient’s needs and desires, whether or not an implant will be used, and the amount of time needed to safely complete the surgery. Generally speaking, our all-inclusive price for a breast lift varies depending on the extent and complexity of the procedure.

Types of Breast Lifts
When considering a breast lift, it's essential to understand the different techniques available. Each type of breast lift is tailored to address specific concerns, ensuring the best possible results for your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.
Traditional Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
The traditional breast lift, also known simply as a mastopexy, is a comprehensive technique that addresses significant sagging and reshapes the breast. The surgeon eliminates excess skin, tightens the remaining tissue, and repositions the nipple to a more youthful position. It is ideal for women with considerable drooping, often after pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Anchor (Inverted-T) Breast Lift
The anchor or inverted-T lift is a variation of the traditional mastopexy, involving incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease itself. This technique provides substantial lift and reshaping for women with severe ptosis (drooping) and can be combined with breast reduction if necessary.
Periareolar (Donut) Breast Lift
The periareolar, or donut lift, involves a circular incision around the edge of the areola. This technique is best for women with mild to moderate sagging and is often chosen by those seeking a subtle lift with minimal scarring. It is also commonly combined with breast augmentation for enhanced results.
Vertical (Lollipop) Breast Lift
The vertical or lollipop lift uses two incisions: one around the areola and one vertical incision from just below the areola down to the breast crease. This approach provides a moderate lift and is an option for women with mild to moderate sagging. It offers a balance between effectiveness and minimal scarring.
Crescent Breast Lift
The crescent lift is the least invasive option, involving a small, crescent-shaped incision along the upper edge of the areola. This technique is typically reserved for women with minimal sagging and is often done in conjunction with breast augmentation. The crescent lift offers the least noticeable scarring, making it ideal for those seeking a minor lift with maximum discretion.
Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery
Restored Youthful Appearance
One of the top benefits of a breast lift is restoring a more youthful breast profile. By repositioning the breasts to a higher, more natural position, the surgery can rejuvenate your overall appearance.
Enhanced Breast Shape and Symmetry
A breast lift also improves breast shape and symmetry. The procedure can correct unevenness, reshape the breasts, and create a more harmonious balance.
Improved Clothing Fit
Sagging breasts can make finding flattering clothes that fit properly more difficult. After a breast lift, many women find that their clothes, including bras, swimsuits, and tops, fit better and provide a more attractive silhouette.
Increased Comfort
Excess sagging skin and low-hanging breasts can cause discomfort, including skin irritation and back or neck pain. Lifting and reshaping the breasts can alleviate these issues, leading to increased physical comfort and a greater sense of ease in daily activities.
Long-Lasting Results
The procedure provides a significant and lasting improvement in breast position and shape, helping you maintain a youthful appearance for many years. Maintaining a stable weight and following your surgeon's post-operative instructions can help prolong the results.
Boosted Self-Confidence
Perhaps the most impactful benefit of a breast lift is the boost in self-confidence that many women experience. Feeling more satisfied with your appearance can improve your overall quality of life.
Breast Lift Candidates
Ideal breast lift candidates are women with sagging or drooping breasts due to age, pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or genetics. This procedure is best suited for those in good overall health, who maintain a stable weight and have realistic expectations about the results. Women who are unhappy with the position, shape, or symmetry of their breasts but are satisfied with their breast size are particularly well-suited for a breast lift. Additionally, candidates should be non-smokers or willing to quit before surgery to ensure optimal healing and results.
