Scar Revision Surgery

Dr. Pittman is a nationally recognized expert on breast augmentation, reduction, and reconstruction surgeries. Dr. Somenek is known for his work in Rhinoplasty, but it only scratches the surface of their specialties. One of their lesser-known services is treating facial scarring.

What is Facial Scar Revision Surgery?

Accidents and surgeries can leave you with facial scars. While scars are nothing to be ashamed of, they can affect your self-confidence. Dr. Michael Somenek is a double board-certified plastic surgeon that can help smooth your skin by reducing the appearance of the scar. Some light scarring may even be invisible to the naked eye.

Some of the types of scars Dr. Somenek treats are hypertrophic, contractures, and keloids.

Hypertrophic scars are raised, while contractures often restrict facial movements. Scars from burns are an example of keloids, often seen on the neck, face, or chest.

All three types of scars are often treatable at our Washington, D.C. office.

Surgical and Non-Surgical Treatments

While Dr. Somenek cannot completely remove the facial scar, it can often be minimized, disguised, or even relocated to a less prominent position.

Significant scarring often requires skin revision surgery. Tissue expansion is often performed to hide a scar by stretching the skin.

Skin flaps and grafts are other options offered at the Washington D.C. location. For major scarring, Z-Plasty often produces the best results. An incision is made around the scar to create a skin flap. It doesn’t remove the scar, but it does make it less noticeable.

Some scars are treatable without invasive surgical procedures. Silicone gels can reduce surface scar discoloration and speed up healing. Dermabrasions are another solution, along with light therapy techniques. The skin is smoothed to remove discoloration and minimize the scar’s appearance.

Sometimes, injectable fillers are the best method for treating minor scarring.
