One of the most innovative and game-changing treatments in the cosmetic enhancement industry is KYBELLA, also called the “double chin shot.” Dr. Michael Somenek was one of the first area physicians to offer KYBELLA in Washington DC, the only injectable treatment approved by the FDA to reduce submental fat — the fat that accumulates on the upper neck and causes a double chin. This simple, quick treatment is an effective and impressive alternative to surgery.

Kybella is comprised of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally-occurring molecule in the body. Once injected, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. These fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so the results are permanent. Dr. Somenek is a leading expert in the Kybella treatment and trains physicians across the country on how to safely use this unique and innovative treatment.
Facial rejuvenation specialist Dr. Somenek evaluates each patient to ensure KYBELLA is appropriate as he customizes the treatment to your needs. At the outset of the treatment, we cleanse the area and use a numbing anesthetic before marking several injection sites. Each session includes multiple injections. The number varies depending on your needs, but 25 to 30 very quick injections are typical.
The total treatment time is less than 20 minutes.
You will need more than 1 treatment for KYBELLA to produce optimal results. Most patients undergo 2 to 4 treatments to achieve maximal results. The treatment sessions are scheduled about 4-6 weeks apart.
Not every patient in Washington DC is a candidate for a KYBELLA treatment. Those that have moderate to severe skin laxity may be more appropriate candidates for skin tightening procedures. KYBELLA represents a groundbreaking alternative to other surgical and non-surgical procedures that improve the appearance of the neck and jawline. It is the only injectable treatment specifically designed to eliminate fat under the chin. Other treatments include:
Dr. Somenek may recommend one of these other treatments if the skin on your neck has lost elasticity or the underlying tissue and muscle of your lower face and neck need lifting to get the aesthetic results desired.
KYBELLA treatments require little to no downtime, but there are some minor side effects that typically last a few days. The most common side effect is swelling which is self limiting and resolves in about 3 days. Icepacks and pain relief medication are typically enough to manage any discomfort associated with the treatment. Some patients notice redness or tenderness around the treatment area. These are temporary and resolve fairly quickly.
Yes. Fat cells destroyed by KYBELLA injections are eliminated from your body, so the results are considered permanent. Even patients who gain a moderate amount of weight after getting KYBELLA treatments should not notice the re-emergence of a double chin.
