Somenek+Pittman MD is the first practice in the Washington DC region to be offering the state of the art Plasma Skin Pen.
The Plasma Skin Pen is the world’s leading plasma application device to treat wrinkles, skin laxity, and improve tone and texture. This procedure can deliver a brighter, more contoured youthful appearance with results that are virtually immediate and incredibly long lasting.
As we age, the dermal layer thins and produces less collagen. The elastin fibers which provide elasticity also wear out which produces changes in the scaffolding of the skin, causing it to wrinkle and sag. Our sebaceous glands get bigger but produce less sebum which can lead to skin dryness. In simplest terms, our skin loses laxity and texture as we grow older. Wrinkles appear alongside other factors including hyperpigmentation, discoloration, and photo-damage.
The ultimate purpose of the Plasma Skin Pen is to help dramatically repair, reverse, and mitigate all these effects to deliver a more youthful appearance that combats the signs of aging in an effective nonsurgical manner. In just one treatment, Dr. Somenek is seeing results, particularly to the upper and lower eyelids, that are superior to laser resurfacing.

Is the treatment painful?
Dr. Somenek provides a topical numbing cream as well as an injectable numbing solution to ensure the treatment is extremely comfortable. Most patients report minimal discomfort and often describe the treatment as a warm, tingly sensation.
When will I see results?
Although the results can be dramatic within the first week, the treated area will continue to internally heal for for weeks to months.
Can the Plasma Skin Pen treat all skin types?
For a revitalizing only skin treatment, we can treat any skin type. For a full plasma skin pen treatment Dr. Somenek only treats skin types 1 to 3 on the Fitzpatrick scale. This means that only Caucasian and lighter skinned individuals can get the full treatment as darker skin types re high risk for hyperpigmentation. Dr. Somenek can determine your skin type during the consultation as recommend if this treatment is appropriate for you.
Will I need more than one treatment?
This is going to depend on a variety of factors including your genetics, how well you take care of your skin, and environmental factors. For many, one treatment is going to give them the collagen stimulation and skin tightening that will last years. Regardless of the patient, Dr. Somenek will recommend waiting 12 weeks before recommending a second treatment. The reason for this is that the deeper layers of the dermis are continually producing collagen from the stimulation that the plasma pen produces to the skin. This process is continuing for 8-12 weeks and patients will see continued improvement during this time.
