Lymphatic Massage – Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Lymphatic massage, sometimes called manual lymphatic drainage, is a specialized type of medical massage. It is a useful treatment for post-operative swelling and bruising.  In our practice, we recommend the treatment for most of our liposuction, tummy tuck and facelift patients.  In our experience, at least three sessions with our specialists results in faster recovery and decreased down time.
Lymphatic massage aims to improve the flow of lymph fluid, which should reduce swelling. Â Massaging an area without swelling will make space for fluid to flow to those parts from more congested areas.
In addition to post-surgical patients, manual lymphatic drainage has also been shown to be effective in patients with:
- cancer treatments that involve the removal of lymph nodes
- patients with compromised immune systems or autoimmune diseases
- following some types of vascular surgery, such as vein stripping
- a buildup of fluid due to deep vein thrombosis
- health conditions that affect blood flow to the extremities, such as the hands and feet
