What is a Facelift?
A facelift (also known as a rhytidectomy) is a procedure where areas of the face and neck, such as loose skin below the chin or droopy eyelids, are tightened via surgery, and excess facial and neck tissue is removed. A local facelift surgery typically targets the cheeks, mid-face, jawline, and neck areas. It can also be done alongside other procedures such as a rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or a forehead lift. A facelift offers you an opportunity to de-age your face by reducing sagging and embarrassing creases.
Qualified Candidates for a Facelift
There are certain patients who will likely get more out of their facelift than others. Qualified candidates are generally in good health and have no compromising medical conditions. You might be a good candidate if you have any or all of the following qualities:
- Loose jowls or poorly defined jawlines
- Loose skin around the cheeks
- You are looking for a sharper and more defined face and jawline
- You desire a more youthful appearance to the face and neck

The Facelift Procedure
Facelift surgery is performed in our private surgical suite under general anesthesia. An assistant will shave the hair around the ears and temples, scrub the area being operated on, and then Dr. Somenek will make tiny incisions along the hairline and above the ears. Loose skin is surgically separated from the underlying tissue and pulled back, the excess skin is removed, and the muscles and connective tissues in the face are tightened. Dr. Somenek uses a series of tiny sutures to close the incisions, which typically dissolve on their own. The incision sites are placed in areas where scars will not be very noticeable, such as along the sideburns or beard lines.
What is a Facelift Recovery Like?
After a NoVa facelift surgery, your operative area will be bandaged for a few days. You will be given post-operative instructions and prescribed pain medications and antibiotics to manage inflammation and prevent infection. Your comfort and satisfaction are our top priorities.
Typically, we remove the sutures in a week or so, and scarring, swelling, and bruising will subside within two weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure. It is highly recommended that you stay out of the sun for several weeks after surgery and refrain from smoking. Facelifts are not a permanent solution to the aging process but they can slow it down for some time.
