As we age, the muscles that support our eyelids tend to weaken and the skin around our eyes loosens, giving us droopy eyes and undereye bags. This can make you look a lot older than you actually are and can even result in vision problems.
These are common issues faced by men and women all over the world. Fortunately, with blepharoplasty, you can say goodbye to the dull, tired appearance caused by drooping upper lids, wrinkles, and undereye bags.
What Is Blepharoplasty and How Does It Work?
Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure where Dr. Somenek removes excess skin, fat, and muscle tissues from the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both sets of lids as needed.
The goal of this procedure is to improve the appearance of the eyes and eyelids while also fixing issues with peripheral vision caused by drooping skin. As a result, patients get a fresh and rejuvenated look.
If you are above the age of 18, you can consider blepharoplasty if you’re experiencing any of the following issues:
• Loose skin on your upper or lower eyelids that make your eyes appear droopy
• Blocked peripheral vision due to sagging upper-eyelid skin
• Undereye bags
• Puffy eyelids due to the presence of fatty deposits
• Fine lines and wrinkles on your eyelids
What Should I Expect Regarding the Procedure and the Recovery Process?
First, you will be administered local or general anesthesia or sedation as recommended. This will make you comfortable for the duration of the blepharoplasty procedure.
Next, Dr. Somenek will make incision lines on your eyelids in such a way that they are not visible and will be hidden by the natural creases of your eyelids. For the upper eyelid, an incision will be made along the crease separating the eyelid from the area below the eyebrow. Excess fat and skin are removed and muscles are tightened.
For your lower lid, Dr. Somenek may make an incision right below your lash line, and this allows for removal or repositioning of excess fat, skin, and muscle tissue. Depending on your case and what you wish to achieve, Dr. Somenek may instead make an incision on the inside of your lower lid (the transconjunctival incision). This fully conceals post-surgical marks but does not allow for removal of excess skin.
Then, using either skin glue or sutures, the incisions are closed. Sutures will be removed a week after your eyelid surgery. During your recovery period, it is normal to experience minor swelling and bruising for about two weeks. After healing is complete, you will have a more refreshed, rejuvenated, and youthful appearance.
