Silicone vs. Saline in Breast Augmentations

Whether from changes related to aging or as the result of genetics, many women are unhappy with either the shape or size of their breasts or even both. Thankfully, breast augmentation has been a proven and safe way to help women achieve the look of their chests they want. Along with the advancement in augmentation techniques, there are also options for the material used for the implants themselves.

As the two materials used to fill a silicone shell for breast implants, silicone and saline each can deliver your aesthetic goals but have a few differences that are worth considering when making the decision of which to use.

Silicone – For the most realistic look and feel, silicone creates a soft, doughy implant that feels more like real breast tissue. Since silicone implants are pre-shaped, there is slightly more able to create and customize the shape vs. a simply round implant. However, since silicone implants are pre-shaped, they require a larger incision and more breast tissue to be successful. They are less prone to rupture, and modern material advancements have created a silicone filler that does not leak but stays together if torn.

Saline – While perhaps not as realistic feeling as silicone, saline still has some advantages. Since saline implants are filled once the shell is implanted in the breast, it requires a much smaller incision and less breast tissue than silicone to be successful. However, since saline implants have a more fluid feel, they are prone to having a rippled look around the edges and if there is a leak or rupture, they will quickly deflate.
