Your breasts can start to droop due to age, gravity, weight loss, pregnancy and breastfeeding, hereditary causes, and other factors. What Is a Mastopexy?
A breast-lift surgery, also known as a mastopexy, is a type of surgery that lifts the breasts and improves their positioning by removing excess sagging skin.
A breast lift can help reshape the breasts and provide them with more appealing contours. By tightening the surrounding tissues, a breast lift can help provide adequate support to the new breast contours.
Most of the time, the underlying breast tissue is repositioned in the new skin envelope. This is in contrast to a breast reduction, where excess skin AND breast tissue are removed.
What Can a Mastopexy Do?
A breast lift can:
• Reduce the size of the areola.
• Uplift the breast placement on the chest and rejuvenate the breast profile to make it look firmer and more youthful.
• Improve the overall shape and the contour of the breasts and make them look more attractive and appealing.
• Improve the fit of bras and other garments.
The Procedure
There are a variety of incision types and procedure techniques available to perform a successful breast lift depending on:
• The size and shape of the breasts
• The positioning and size of the nipples and areolae
• Skin elasticity and quality
• Degree of sagging of the breasts
• Amount of extra tissue to be removed
Step I – Anesthesia
The patient is given either local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia depending on their comfort level and the recommendation of Dr. Pittman.
Step II – Making the Incisions
Dr. Pittman will make one of the following three types of incisions:
¥ Around the areola in two concentric circles
¥ Around the areola and then downwards vertically towards the crease of the breast
¥ Around the areola, downwards vertically towards the breast crease, and then along the breast crease horizontally
Step III – Reshaping the Breasts
After Dr. Pittman makes the necessary incisions, he will:
¥ Reposition surrounding breast tissue and lift up the breasts to an elevated position. Breast firmness and contours are improved to give the breasts a more youthful look.
¥ The nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position on the breast. The areola is reduced in size if required.
¥ The skin around the breast region is tightened and stretched to improve perkiness.
Step IV – Closing the Incisions
The incisions are closed using sutures once the excess skin has been removed, the remaining skin has been tightened, and the breasts have been reshaped.
The incisions are usually well-camouflaged, but any visible lines will fade slowly over time with the application of topical anti-scar creams. Results are visible immediately.
